Americans United Flag Across America: Media Talking Points #1

Why? "To demonstrate our support for the families of the victims in all areas attacked on Sept. 11 and to honor our fallen comrades. We want to 'complete the flight' from BOS-LAX that AA Flt. 11 and UA Flt. 175 were unable to finish."
What is it? "American and United employees, together with our friends in the US military, are going to run a US flag, on foot, from Boston-Logan Airport to Los Angeles International. It is to show our patriotism, honor our fallen comrades and other victims as well as to raise money for charities supporting the victims families."
The Flag "The flag was flown in the cockpit of an F-16 by an American Airlines pilot activated by his fighter unit in the no-fly zone in Southern Iraq. We are honored and pleased to carry it, and wave it proudly, from shore to shore."
What can I do? "Go online to our web site, www.flagrun2001.org to sign up to run, lend other support or just find out when the flag will pass near your town. Anyone can participate in this great event. If you can't come out-or even if you can-visit our donations page, pick one of the memorial funds or charities and make a contribution to our nation's recovery."
What route will the flag follow? "Generally, the flag will begin down US Route 1, from Boston all the way to Augusta. We will begin with a kickoff rally at the Rack Room restaurant in Boston on October 10, where we hope to have a live radio broadcast and raise awareness and donations. On October 11 at 11 a.m., we will begin the kickoff ceremony with the flag departing at noon. For real-time location and time information, see the web site."
How many people are involved? "In three days of taking volunteers and runners, we have nearly 800 people-and it hasn't even started yet. This is a month-long event, we expect several thousand people, with hopefully tens of thousands cheering us as we pass by. As we said, anyone can help-just go to www.flagrun2001.org.
What about states not included on the route? "We are working on a plan to include other states-look at the web site in the coming days for details."
