DC Update #4 Sun 10/14/2001 3:17 PM EST

This should be the last message before we run...

I sent out an email message to you earlier in the day asking for RV drivers. If you can assist in driving the RV the length of the route please page me at 888-555-5555. Some things to remember...

  1. We start at the corner of RI Ave. and Eastern Ave.
  2. If you want to meet at the border. Please get there no later than 0545 in the morning so I can go over a few things with you before the flag get there. I will likely need a volunteer to run up into MD ¼ mile or so to guide the MD team into DC.
  3. The RI metro stop has parking! The lot opens at 0500. An option for some of you is to park at the RI metro and jog up to the border (1.9Miles), and then run with the flag back to do as much of the route as you would like. There are a number of metro stops along the way where you can peel off of the group and get back to your car. If you run the whole way… you will finish at the Arlington Memeorial metro stop. From there you can get your way home or back to your car.
  4. Another option you have is to park at the RI metro station and wait there as we come through with the flag... then you can join us.
  5. I will be at the border at 0530. I will be wearing a US Flag ball cap and have a white Flag T shirt. I’ll make myself known.
  6. The pace in DC is set at a 10 minutes per mile pace. I will ask for help from some of the pacers in the group to keep us on track so that we do not exceed that pace.
    06:05 AM 0.5 S Dakota Ave NE
    06:32 AM 2.8 N Capitol St NE
    06:46 AM 4.1 Logan Circle
    06:51 AM 4.5 Scott Circle
    06:57 AM 5.0 White House
07:04 AM 5.6 Pennsylvania Ave NW
    07:17 AM 6.8 Capitol Building
    07:22 AM (5-Minute Pause)
07:47 AM 9.0 Arlington Memorial Bridge (South Walkway)
    08:00 AM 10.1 DC/VA Border

We will turn the Flag over to Gary Boettcher and his gang from Virginia at 0800.

Here are the notes from Saturday that are still valid.

  1. For those that can meet at the MD DC line, we will meet on the North Side (left side as you are heading out of town) of RI Ave. at the DC line. This is where Eastern Ave. cross RI Ave. There is an abandoned Gas station there that will make for the perfect Meeting spot. It would be nice to have a good crowd there as the MD runner’s hand off the flag.
  2. If you are going to meet at the RI Metro stop, you are only 1.9 miles away from the border so we will be there 19 minutes from the time we get the flag
  3. For those people coming to run before daybreak, consider wearing light colored clothes and any reflecting gear that you may have.
  4. Consider bringing a small flashlight.
  5. There are no water stops along the route so make sure to drink plenty of fluids before coming out. There are a few public restrooms along the way (near the Washington Monument) so you should not have too many problems.
  6. Be particularly careful during the run as there will be some areas undergoing construction.
  7. Be courteous to your fellow runners. There are a total of nine miles in the District and plenty of opportunities for everyone to carry the Flag.
  8. Be advised that the Metro opens on weekdays at 5:30 am. Any folks participating in the run who wish to Metro over to Rhode Island Avenue TOGETHER can meet outside the The Department of Energy, Forrestal Building lobby at 10th St. & Independence Ave., SW, at 5:15 am; or at 5:25 am at the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station at 7th. Fred Butterfield will lead a group onto the Metro at that times.
  9. If any of you out there has a digital camera, please bring it along and snap a few photos. We'll see if we can top that CT photo with a DC photo.

God Bless you all,

Tom D'Agostino
