Arizona Personal Diary: Scott Hatch

I woke up at 0430 on November seventh in order to catch up with the American Flag that was currently being relayed through our state. I had no idea of what to expect. I was under the impression that myself and six of my friends from the local Forest Service would be the only ones to run the flag into Globe from approximately 30 miles out. It was an inspirational sight to see the flag being carried by runners accompanied by all of the support vehicles. I enjoyed running with the flag so much that I ended up running 29 miles (I hadn't run that far for over ten years).

I appreciate Mike and the others who took the time and effort to organize this relay. They gave me a real opportunity to reflect on what has happened here in America and how blessed we really are to live here. It is great to see all of the patriotism that has been shown since 9-11-01, hopefully it will remain. When we sing God Bless America, are we sincere? I know that if we are doing our best to live good lives then God will bless America, but there is always room for improvement. Americans united, we must be.

I will always remember 9-11-01 and my participation in the Americans United flag relay across America. Carrying the pole with each of the names and information about the airline employees made it all the more real for me. Hearing and seeing the children from the local school cheering for our country brought me to tears. We need to do our best to preserve the same freedoms for them that we enjoy now. Let us be true to our country and stand strong, and may God Bless America.
