Georgia Coordinator's Letter #1
October 18, 2001

Hi Everyone-

The Flag Run has been going great and is heading to Georgia. By the time this is posted on the website, the flag will probably already be here.

The flag is scheduled to arrive into Georgia on Friday afternoon at 1PM. and proceed to the Alabama border for the handoff on Sunday, October 21, 2001, at 2PM EST.

The route has been divided into four sections. It will mainly follow Hwy. 278 and 78 (ie: basically paralleling I-20.)

  1. Augusta to Madison – Friday 1:10 PM – Saturday 10:02 AM
  2. Madison to Atlanta – Sat. 10:02 AM - 8:23 PM
  3. Metro Atlanta - Sat. 8:23 PM – Sun. 12:46 AM
  4. West of Atlanta to the Alabama border – Sun 12:46 AM – 2 PM (1PM central)
We are doing our best to contact every runner that has signed up, but there is so much to do that we may have overlooked some of you. We hope you will understand. If you have not been contacted to run, please show up and run with the other runners already scheduled. The more runners the better! For the exact times and locations, please refer to the Georgia state page on the website. Find your favorite spot and join in the run. (The timeline is an estimation. Exact times will vary with the speed of the runners. Expect it to be anywhere from on-time to 30 minutes behind schedule. If possible, we will post an update on the GA state page as the run progresses.)

The following are some rules and recommendations for the runners:

  1. Dress appropriately, it might get cold.
  2. Stay in a group. We’ll go slow so don’t straggle out, especially in the towns and cities.
  3. We will have a Georgia Highway Patrol escort for the entire run from the South Carolina state line to the Alabama state line. ALWAYS stay behind the police escort. This is for your protection.
  4. At night, wear a reflective vest and a light colored t-shirt. A limited number of reflective vests are available in the motor home, but please bring one if you have one and are running at night. Also, be prepared with flashlights. We’ll let you know if they are needed for your run.
  5. Drink water before the run and have a snack after the run. We have a limited numbers of snacks and bottled water to distribute, but we urge you to bring your own.
  6. Please be courteous to others and pass the flag around so everyone has the opportunity to carry it.
  7. When passing the flag to others, please treat it with the respect and honor that it deserves.
  8. Please remember why we are here. It’s not just to run. It’s to remember and honor those who lost their lives on September 11th.
  9. Have fun, but be responsible and courteous to others.

A ceremony is scheduled in Augusta on Friday, October 19th, at 1:10PM at the Riverwalk Amphitheater. In Atlanta, something is being planned at the Varsity on Saturday at 10:30PM. Please consider joining us at either of these two locations.

Thank you all for your support in this great event. Whether you are running or not, please come out and cheer for the runners. God Bless America!
